Splits Before the Session Ends: Why 5 Minutes Saves 5 Years
The worst time to agree on songwriting splits is after the song makes money. A case for documenting the split in the room — and exactly what to capture before anyone leaves.

Everyone in the room agrees the session was great. Nobody wants to be the person who says "let's write down who owns what" before the vibes have faded. So it doesn't get written down — and then the song does something, real money appears, and memories of who contributed what diverge in very convenient directions. A five-minute conversation becomes a five-year dispute.
Why the day-of matters so much
Songwriting splits are a negotiation, and the only time everyone has zero incentive to inflate their contribution is before the song is worth anything. The moment there's money, every memory shifts. Documenting at the session isn't distrust — it's protecting the friendship from the future.
Lock the split while the song is worth nothing — it never gets easier.
What to capture
- Every writer's legal name and the percentage they hold.
- Each writer's PRO (ASCAP, BMI, etc.) and their IPI/CAE number.
- The publisher or admin for each writer, if any.
- The song title and the date, with everyone's acknowledgement.
The percentages must total 100. That sounds obvious; a surprising number of disputes come from sheets that don't add up because someone was added later and nobody re-balanced.
The split sheet is not the registration
Agreeing the split is step one. The song then has to be registered — with each writer's PRO and publishing admin — or the performance and mechanical money accrues somewhere uncollected. A signed split sheet that never turns into a registration is a promise, not a payment.
Keep a checklist, not a memory
Across a catalog, the leak isn't usually one missing split — it's a dozen songs half-registered across different writers and territories. A manager who keeps a per-song registration checklist is quietly collecting money that would otherwise sit in a black box forever.
Five minutes at the end of the session, every session. It's the cheapest insurance in the business.
MANAGR captures writer and publishing splits per song, generates a clean split sheet, and keeps a registration checklist so every song gets collected on.
